Opioid Settlement Funds Rural Initiatives Coordinator

  • Estimated Timeframe:  October 1, 2025 – October 31, 2026 

  • Salary range; $60k - $63k

  • This position is grant-funded and is contingent upon the availability and continuation of grant funding for one year, with the possibility of extension.

Job Type:

  • Remote - Full-time (typically 40 hours per week), exempt position. May require evening or weekend availability, depending on community needs and outreach events

  • Travel required up to 15 - 20% per month. 

Location: Remote in New Jersey (preference for candidates residing in rural communities)

Benefits:
Paid time off, including 15 days (120 hours) of vacation, sick, personal, and nine (9) holidays.

Education Preferred

Degree in community development, public health, public policy, public administration, or related field preferred.

Key responsibilities

  • Stakeholder engagement: 

    • Serving as a liaison to local governments, community service boards, state agencies, non-profits, and other relevant stakeholders.

    • Fostering collaboration among community partners, government entities, educational institutions, and businesses to promote effective use of settlement funds and leverage existing resources

  • Community Building:

    • Facilitating and scheduling meetings and community conversations to raise public awareness and understanding of the opioid crisis, available resources, and the use of settlement funds.

    • Conduct listening sessions with various constituencies, record their input, and compile the information for theme analysis and follow-up engagement. 

    • Collaborating on efforts to understand community needs and incorporating the voices of individuals in recovery and underserved communities in decision-making processes.

    • Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with various community members and organizations, including those with lived experience of opioid use disorder, patient advocates, and law enforcement personnel.

    • Support individuals with lived and living experience to participate in the work and help them access available opportunities to build their skills as community activists and organizers, informing drug policy measures that directly impact them. 

  • Technical assistance: 

    • Providing technical assistance and support to community organizations in rural areas in developing and implementing programs that utilize opioid settlement funds.

  • Data analysis and reporting: 

    • Developing reports, analyzing data, and sharing findings to highlight program successes and areas for improvement, and ensuring compliance with funding requirements and reporting.

Skills and Expertise Required
The ideal candidate is a compassionate, team-oriented individual who is flexible and able to pivot quickly in response to evolving circumstances—whether in community building or organizational planning.

Community Engagement & Outreach

  • Experience conducting outreach and engagement with communities and organizations impacted by the overdose crisis

  • Experience planning and facilitating public meetings

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external partners

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of individuals and organizations

  • Experience liaising with local governments

Facilitation & Communication

  • Skilled in facilitating group discussions

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Public Health Knowledge & Context

  • Knowledge of public health systems and ecosystems

  • Familiarity with substance use, harm reduction, and their intersections with racial justice and health equity

  • Understanding of rural harm reduction practices

  • Familiarity with qualitative research and analysis

Project Management & Technical Skills

  • Project management expertise, including the ability to exercise independent judgment and meet deadlines

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently

  • Proficiency with Google Suite
